    Hermitian symmetric manifolds are Hermitian manifolds which are homogeneous and such that every point has a symmetry preserving the Hermitian structure.     Half-BPS quotients in M-theory: ADE with a twist

    We classify Freund-Rubin backgrounds of eleven-dimensional supergravity of the form AdS_4 x X^7 which are at least half BPS; equivalently, smooth quotients of the round 7-sphere by finite subgroups of SO(8) which admit an (N>3)-dimensional subspace of Killing spinors. The classification is given in terms of pairs consisting of an ADE subgroup of SU(2) and an automorphism defining its embedding in SO(8). In particular we find novel half-BPS quotients associated with the subgroups of type D_n (for n>5), E_7 and E_8 and their outer automorphisms.Comment: 16 pages; V2: notational inconsistencies addressed, final version to be published in JHE

    A Connection between Twistors and Superstring Sigma Models on Coset Superspaces

    We consider superstring sigma models that are based on coset superspaces G/H in which H arises as the fixed point set of an order-4 automorphism of G. We show by means of twistor theory that the corresponding first-order system, consisting of the Maurer-Cartan equations and the equations of motion, arises from a dimensional reduction of some generalised self-dual Yang-Mills equations in eight dimensions. Such a relationship might help shed light on the explicit construction of solutions to the superstring equations including their hidden symmetry structures and thus on the properties of their gauge theory duals.Comment: v3: 16 pages, typos fixed and minor clarifications adde

    It is well established that the pectinolytic bacteria Pectobacterium atrosepticum (Pca) and Dickeya spp. are causal organisms of blackleg in potato. In temperate climates, the role of Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc) in potato blackleg, however, is unclear. In different western and central European countries plants are frequently found with blackleg from which only Pcc can be isolated, but not Pca or Dickeya spp. Nevertheless, tubers vacuum-infiltrated with Pcc strains have so far never yielded blackleg-diseased plants in field experiments in temperate climates. In this study, it is shown that potato tubers, vacuum-infiltrated with a subgroup of Pcc strains isolated in Europe, and planted in two different soil types, can result in up to 50% blackleg diseased plants

    Production of high quality organic vegetable seeds encounters several challenges. Research is performed to support seed companies in producing vigorous and healthy organic vegetable seeds. Examples are provided with respect to research on seed vigour, determining critical control points to avoid disease transmission to the seeds, seed treatments with natu-ral compounds, new seed sorting techniques and enhancement of the natural plant defence. It is noticed that the restrictions in EU regulation 2092/91 on organic production are at present blocking the use of promising natural and sustainable components for seed treatments

    Improvement of the quality of propagation material for organic farming system

    The use of organic propagation material is obligatory according to the current EU regulations for organic production. However, frequently difficulties are en-countered regarding the availability, the costs or the quality. In the Netherlands a national research program aims at developing solutions, needed for improving the production of high quality organic propagation material. The main emphasis in the pro-gram is on the model crops cabbage, onion, wheat and potato. Individual projects within the program include epidemiological studies of seed borne dis-eases to develop disease prevention strategies, meth-ods to improve resistance of seeds and seedlings towards pathogens and methods to control silver scurf in seed potatoes, development of multi-spectral analysis and sorting techniques and methods for analysis and improvement of seed vigour. Active involvement of producers and users of the seeds or seed potatoes ensures that the results will be imple-mented in practice. The program also aims at strengthening the international collaboration, amongst others through involvement in international research projects

    Two-dimensional array of magnetic particles: The role of an interaction cutoff

    Based on theoretical results and simulations, in two-dimensional arrangements of a dense dipolar particle system, there are two relevant local dipole arrangements: (1) a ferromagnetic state with dipoles organized in a triangular lattice, and (2) an anti-ferromagnetic state with dipoles organized in a square lattice. In order to accelerate simulation algorithms we search for the possibility of cutting off the interaction potential. Simulations on a dipolar two-line system lead to the observation that the ferromagnetic state is much more sensitive to the interaction cutoff RR than the corresponding anti-ferromagnetic state. For R≳8R \gtrsim 8 (measured in particle diameters) there is no substantial change in the energetical balance of the ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic state and the ferromagnetic state slightly dominates over the anti-ferromagnetic state, while the situation is changed rapidly for lower interaction cutoff values, leading to the disappearance of the ferromagnetic ground state. We studied the effect of bending ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic two-line systems and we observed that the cutoff has a major impact on the energetical balance of the ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic state for Râ‰Č4R \lesssim 4. Based on our results we argue that R≈5R \approx 5 is a reasonable choice for dipole-dipole interaction cutoff in two-dimensional dipolar hard sphere systems, if one is interested in local ordering.Comment: 8 page

    The Grover algorithm with large nuclear spins in semiconductors

    We show a possible way to implement the Grover algorithm in large nuclear spins 1/2<I<9/2 in semiconductors. The Grover sequence is performed by means of multiphoton transitions that distribute the spin amplitude between the nuclear spin states. They are distinguishable due to the quadrupolar splitting, which makes the nuclear spin levels non-equidistant. We introduce a generalized rotating frame for an effective Hamiltonian that governs the non-perturbative time evolution of the nuclear spin states for arbitrary spin lengths I. The larger the quadrupolar splitting, the better the agreement between our approximative method using the generalized rotating frame and exact numerical calculations.Comment: 11 pages, 18 EPS figures, REVTe
